Book Review of Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
What I Liked
Six of Crows delves deep into the complexities of personal identity and the strength to break free from oppressive circumstances.
This is evident in the character development, which is a standout feature of the novel. Bardugo masterfully crafts each member of the crew with depth and complexity, and though they are all very different from one another, it is clear there is common ground in their ambitions.
The story is told through different points of view, allowing the reader to become invested in their stories, motivations, and unique personalities. The relationships between the characters are expertly portrayed, showcasing both genuine camaraderie and internal conflicts.
Bardugo’s writing style is nothing short of exceptional. From the very first page, you are ensnared by her vivid descriptions and intense storytelling.
The world-building in “Six of Crows” is meticulous and easy to immerse yourself into. I can clearly imagine this gritty and dangerous city she has created, where every decision could mean life or death for the crew.
The heist plotline drives the narrative forward with constant twists and turns. Bardugo keeps you on the edge of your seat by expertly balancing action-packed scenes with moments of introspection and emotional depth.
The pacing is superb, ensuring that the story never loses momentum.
What Could Have Been Better
While Six of Crows is a remarkable read and I immediately picked up the sequel, Crooked Kingdom, upon finishing, there is one thing that nagged me throughout.
One of the characters, Wylan, never has his point of view told in his own chapter. This could be because of a character trait we learn about him later in the book (which I won’t say to avoid spoilers) but it also means you don’t get to really connect with him like the others.
Some of the scenes are rather dark and contain mature content. This book is intended for ages 12 – 18 years, but I felt it was too dark in some places for a 12-year-old.
If there are any parents considering this for their child, I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone under the age of 16.
There are scenes that are gruesome in a way that makes your stomach turn, which has been done to highlight the ferocity of Kaz Brekker, the leader of the group.
It’s important to note that some readers may find certain scenes to be intense or triggering, though it’s been done to show the desperation of the characters.
Similar Works
Of course, Leigh Bardugo’s other series in the same universe, Shadow and Bone, is the most similar title to Six of Crows.
Another novel that stands out as being quite similar is The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller, which follows a woman hired to assassinate a King, but falls in love with him instead. It has the same level of action, intrigue, and darkness.
